The average cost of repairing an air conditioner is $336. The usual range is $163-$520, with AC repairs costing as much as $1100 at the high end. Replacing a residential air compressor, for example, can cost between $1350 and $1800, while replacing an evaporator coil can cost between $650 and $1200.
A central air conditioner replacement generally costs around $5,000. This price, however, depends upon the size of your property and the complexity of the job. A new air conditioner can cost up to $12,500. The cost of labor to remove and dispose of the old system is included in the pricing. The size of your house, the type of AC unit and the complexity of your ducting may all boost the cost.
For minor tune-ups, regular AC maintenance costs $75 to $200. Extended service contracts range from $150 to $500 and encompass the whole HVAC system, including heating and cooling. Expect to spend $50 to $150 per hour for an HVAC specialist for repairs that are not part of a routine service. A service call typically includes cleaning the condenser and doing a series of inspections to ensure that your system is operating correctly. They will also look for signs of wear and tear to proactively fix them before a more expensive repair is needed. Evaporator coil and duct cleaning are not generally included in standard AC tune-ups.
