The national average for central air conditioning repair is between $50 and $100 for a service charge and $300 for both labor and parts. Heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) providers usually charge fixed fees for whatever service is required. Your prices will be determined by whether the technician needs to replace components or add refrigerant, the distance between you and the HVAC business and the season (rates tend to be higher in the summer). The sum of all of this is known as a service call fee. As a general rule, the older the unit, the higher the price.
The average cost of replacing an air conditioning unit is $7,000, with a usual range of $5,000 to $10,000. Depending on the brand and size, this equates to $25 to $60 per square foot of coverage. A new installation will cost between $1,500 and $12,500. You may save up to $3,000 on the purchase and installation of a new HVAC system by taking advantage of rebates. Your selections are determined by the year and kind of system. Remember that rebates and tax credits may expire on an annual basis. A dated receipt is generally required to qualify. Your HVAC technician can help you find and file for applicable rebates.
Hire a professional service expert if your air conditioner requires more than routine maintenance. A well-trained expert will diagnose and repair any issues with your air conditioning system. The technician should do the following:
- Check for the proper amount of refrigerant
- Using a leak detector, check for refrigerant leaks
- Instead of unlawfully releasing any refrigerant that has to be removed from the system, capture it.
- In central systems, look for and seal duct leaks
- Airflow via the evaporator coil should be measured
- Check the right electric control sequence and ensure the heating and cooling systems are not operating at the same time.

Got called to a commercial property in Lubbock where the office manager said one wing of the building had been significantly warmer than the other side all summer and the staff on that side had been running portable fans. Inspected the duct system serving both wings and found the warm side had no return air serving it at all, only supply, which was creating a pressure imbalance that was pushing against the supply air and reducing effective airflow into that part of the building. Installed a properly sized return air grille and duct connecting to the main return trunk, tested static pressure on both sides of the system, and confirmed even temperature distribution across the full office floor within one operating cycle.
Arrived at a home in the Shadow Hills area in Lubbock where the homeowner had been noticing a musty smell from the supply vents that got stronger in the afternoon when the system had been running for several hours. The cooling was working fine. This was a biological growth issue on the evaporator coil fins from operating in a humid air handler cabinet without any UV protection through several West Texas summers. Cleaned the coil surface thoroughly, inspected the drain pan for secondary growth, and installed a UV light system inside the air handler aimed directly at the coil. Connected the ballast to a properly switched power source with a safety interlock and verified lamp activation during the blower cycle. Odor should clear over the next couple of weeks.
Headed out to a home in the Maxey Park area of west Lubbock where the homeowner said the AC was cooling to the thermostat setpoint fine but the house still felt damp and clammy inside all afternoon. Running the AC hard through a West Texas summer pulls moisture out of the air but there are days when the system just cannot keep up with the humidity load alone. Installed a whole-home dehumidifier tied into the return duct system, connected the condensate drain line, calibrated the humidity controls to target comfortable indoor levels, and tested operation alongside the central AC. Homeowner said the house felt noticeably different before I even finished walking through the controls.
Responded to a home in Lubbock where the homeowner reported the heat pump was icing up during the early morning hours despite the hot Texas summer weather. After a full diagnostic, I found the defrost control board had failed and was no longer initiating defrost cycles when needed, allowing frost to accumulate on the outdoor coil during periods of high overnight humidity. Replaced the faulty defrost control board, confirmed the defrost sensor was operating within specifications, and tested the system through a complete defrost cycle to verify proper operation. The heat pump returned to normal cooling without restriction, and the homeowner can expect reliable performance even through humid Texas summer nights.
Arrived at a home in the Quaker Heights neighborhood of south Lubbock where the homeowner said the AC had been making a grinding noise from the outdoor unit for the past few days and now the house was climbing even though the system was still running. Inspected the outdoor unit and found the condenser fan motor had developed bearing failure and was seizing intermittently, causing the motor to drag and eventually stop turning while the compressor kept trying to run. The compressor was starting to overheat from the lack of airflow. Replaced the fan motor and matching run capacitor before any compressor damage occurred, cleared the cabinet of debris, and tested the system through several full cooling cycles. Running quiet and cool now and the homeowner caught it before it turned into a much more expensive call.
Pulled up to a home in the Stonewood Estates neighborhood in south Lubbock where the homeowner said the AC had been cooling poorly for two weeks and another company had already been out without finding anything wrong. Ran a careful diagnostic and found a failed thermostatic expansion valve that was restricting refrigerant flow through the evaporator coil. The system was technically running but it could not do real work pulling heat out of the house with the TXV failing like that. Replaced the valve, verified refrigerant charge and pressures, and ran an extended cooling cycle to confirm the system was performing correctly. House reached the set temperature for the first time in two weeks and the homeowner finally had a straight answer.
Performed a drain repair to restore proper drainage and eliminate the source of the issue. Inspected the affected drain line, identified the problem area, and completed the necessary repairs to the piping and fittings. Tested the drain with multiple water flow cycles to verify proper operation and confirmed there were no leaks or drainage restrictions upon completion.
Performed an exterior electrical upgrade and service, including inspection of outdoor electrical equipment, wiring, and connections. Replaced and upgraded the necessary exterior electrical components, secured all connections, and verified proper grounding and weather-resistant protection where applicable. Tested all circuits and equipment to confirm safe, reliable operation and proper functionality upon completion.
Performed an electrical upgrade and service, beginning with a thorough inspection of the existing electrical system and panel. Replaced and upgraded the necessary electrical components, tightened and tested all connections, and verified proper circuit operation. Completed safety and performance testing to ensure the electrical system is operating safely, reliably, and within current standards.
Headed out to a home in the Remington Park neighborhood in west Lubbock where the homeowner wanted to do something about the air quality inside the house. They had three kids with seasonal allergies and said the inside of the house felt dusty and stale no matter how often they changed the filter. West Texas in the summer pushes a lot of particulate through homes that do not have proper filtration, and a standard one-inch filter is not built to handle what the wind out here carries. Installed an AprilAire Healthy Air System in the return duct, sealed all cabinet transitions, verified system static pressure was not adversely affected, and walked the homeowner through the filter replacement schedule for their household size. The air coming out of the vents smelled cleaner before I even made it back to the truck.
Got called out to a home in the Primrose Pointe neighborhood in Lubbock where the homeowner said every room in the house had been reaching temperature fine until about a week ago, when the two rooms on the south side started running noticeably warmer without anything obvious changing. Inspected the system and found the zoning damper actuator controlling the south zone had seized up in a partially closed position, cutting airflow to those rooms while the rest of the system operated normally. Replaced the actuator, cycled the damper through its full range of motion under zone control, and tested thermostat calls from the south zone to confirm the panel was reading and responding correctly. Both rooms were pulling down to temperature within the first full cycle after the repair.
Responded to a home in the Shadow Hills neighborhood of northwest Lubbock where the homeowner called saying the ceiling in the hallway near the air handler closet had a water stain spreading out from the corner closest to the unit. The air handler itself was in a closet with no secondary drain pan below it, so when the primary condensate drain started backing up from algae growth, the overflow went straight into the ceiling drywall. Cleared the primary drain, treated it with algaecide, installed a ceiling saver kit above the air handler to catch any future overflow before it reaches the ceiling, and tested the float switch to confirm it would trip before water could get high enough to escape. Got the closet squared away and the homeowner has protection they did not have before.
Arrived at a home near the Kings Gate area of south Lubbock where the homeowner said the supply vents in their master bedroom had been putting out noticeably less air than the rest of the house for most of the summer. The system was cooling the main living areas but the master bedroom felt stuffy no matter the thermostat setting. Pulled the ductwork layout and found the branch serving the master had a crushed section where someone had stored items against it in the attic over the winter. The duct had stayed compressed even after the items were moved. Replaced the crushed section with a properly supported new run, verified airflow at the master register matched the rest of the system, and confirmed the room temperature was dropping correctly during a full cooling cycle. First good night of sleep they have had all summer.
Made it out to a home in the Frankford Farms area of south Lubbock where the homeowner said their system had been working fine all spring but stopped keeping up the moment temperatures pushed past 95 for the first time this summer. Ran a full diagnostic and found a refrigerant charge that had been sitting noticeably low, probably since the last service visit years ago when it was never verified against manufacturer spec. There was no active leak, just an undercharge that was costing them comfort and efficiency every single day. Pressure-tested to confirm the system was tight, adjusted the charge to Carrier spec, and ran performance testing through a full cooling cycle. Run times shortened, temperature split tightened up, and the house was noticeably cooler before I left the driveway.

AC System Replacement: Replaced an aging central air conditioning system that had developed a failing compressor and was no longer cost-effective to repair. Removed the existing indoor coil and outdoor condenser, installed a new high-efficiency matched system with updated refrigerant lines and a new filter drier, balanced airflow through the existing ductwork, and verified supply temperature split at key vents to confirm even, efficient cooling across the home.
HVAC Tune-Up: Performed a comprehensive pre-summer tune-up on a residential split system ahead of West Texas heat. Cleaned the condenser coil, tested the dual-run capacitor and contactor, tightened electrical connections at the disconnect and air handler, replaced the return air filter, and flushed the condensate drain with treatment solution. Verified proper temperature split across the evaporator coil during a full cooling cycle.

Brett arrived on time and got right to work - diagnosing the issues with the thermostat in the hall of the house, the heater in garage and air conditioner out the back door.
